The first of my two sessions at the Metrowest Symposium: "Sharing Your Identity on Social Media" is now available for viewing via YouTube. 

Franklin TV recorded this session and each of the other breakout sessions. The format of the day called for two sessions each on four topics. While the sessions themselves covered the same topic, the Q&A in each may have been slightly different as the participants changed. The first session was recorded, the second was not.

What will Job Search Jam Sessions be like?

Unlike other conferences, this one depends upon you and the others participating. You help to make this happen by showing up, asking questions, offering to help and networking. You will get out of this event as much, if not more, than you put in. This will be your time to find out what others know, get your questions answered from those who can answer them, and get to network with others to build your listing of valuable connections.

How should I prepare?
Come to the event prepared to share something you have learned along the way. Come prepared for learn. Come prepared to network (bring business cards).

How should I dress?
Dress as you would for any other networking event, business casual or business comfortable. You still want to make a good first impression but a suit or tux is not required.

When do the doors open?
The registration/welcome desk will be open at 8:30 AM.
You can check in, pay at the door (if you elected to do that), and make a name tag.

Beginning at 9:00 AM (or thereabouts) we'll provide an overview of an unconference using the open space technology.

What is the registration fee being used for? 

1. We intentionally don't want to make money, we recognize that funds are tight.
2. We did want to charge something to ensure a reasonable headcount for planning purposes.

Hence, the $8 charge seems reasonable and allows us to plan a good event and to make a contribution to the church for the use of the facility.

Your registration fee ($8.00) paid via Eventbrite nets the organizing team approx. $6.50 (Eventbrite has a charge for processing the credit card). 

From the $6.50 times however many people register, we will plan for refreshments, lunch and will purchase accordingly.

All surplus funds will be donated to the St John the Evangelist Parish. The church has graciously allowed us use of the facility for free. A full accounting of the receipts and expenses will be provided to the attendees.

G’day! I’m Brittany MacLeod, but my mates call me BMAC. I’m an electrically enthusiastic sheila who squeezes the most out of every day. I’m always down for an adventure and to explore. I’m the furthest thing from shy and love meeting new people. Variety is the spice of life, which is why I’m applying for the best job in the world! 

The 30 second entry video for this contest wasn’t enough time for me to express just how fun and qualified I am to be Chief Funster, so I decided to create a social media campaign [leading up to the day they announce the final contestants] further convincing why Australia should pick me for the best job in the world!

If you don't already know Brittany, you can quickly find out a lot about her with this campaign for the 'best job in the world.'




I remember Brittany as she was the FHS Student representative to the School Committee for a couple of years. This was in the time where my schedule allowed me to report from more of those meetings than I have been able to recently. She was always a bundle of energy.

So what is one lesson to take away from this? For those in the job market, this is a good example of what it can take to get what you want. That BMAC, an FHS graduate, is now one of the top 25 out of thousands of applications from around the world for a position in Australia is significant.




Will this kind of social media campaign work for every job applicant? No, but consider what you can do for your job search circumstances. This topic will be one of those on the agenda for discussion at the Job search Jam Sessions coming up on June 14th.

Network, network, network

Network, network, network

Yes, that could be taken as an update on the legendary "location, location, location". You do need to keep your network aware of what you are doing. You need to be aware of what is happening within your network. I have heard it said that "it is how you know". I have also heard it said that "it is what you know." I think it is more of a combination of those two: who knows what you know and can do!

How do you keep your network informed? Publish updates, send emails, with technology opportunities today, there are so many possibilities. Do what you are comfortable with and works for you.

How do you keep informed of what's happening in your network? Likewise, there are any number of tools available to use. One tried and true method is simply presence. Go where your network is. See and be seen!

walking around

On my 'reporting by walking around' Franklin, I carry my camera and find photo opportunities. Some photos I use right away, some are filed away for use when I need either inspiration or an example of something I already found to help make the point.

Yes, 'reporting by walking around' is a take off on the 'managing by walking around' business concept that has had some legs because it works. It becomes harder to do today physically only because less of us are really all working in the same space. Some of my team at work are not in the same building so touching base with them can't be done by walking around. Technology steps in to help. I can still reach out to talk, chat, email etc with them every day.

Walking helps me keep in touch with what is going on around Franklin. I make time for that on the weekend. With my work schedule and shrinking daylight hours, the weekend is the only practical time for this. Networking can be done on a 7 x 24 x 365 basis. What used to be done only in person can now be done almost anytime, anywhere via technology. Chat, hangouts, email, LinkedIn... the choice of tools is almost growing daily.

On the network theme, have your looked at your LinkedIn network? Did you know you could?

Yes, you can. LinkedIn Labs has a visualization tool that takes your connections and shows how they inter-relate with each other. This can be a very powerful way to see what you have and what to do next.

You may recall my story of having left Fidelity at the end of 2008 with most of my 200 connections from Fidelity. Knowing what I knew about the changes and the likelihood of getting back there permanently, I needed to expand my network. Methodically, I did grow my network to over the 900 connections I have today by focusing on the other areas of my interest, particularly social media , local journalism (place blogging), and non-profit volunteering.



As I participated in the various New England PodCamps and other unconferences, I made connections to grow my network.

PodCamp Western Mass - Scholarships Available

There will be a Job Search Jam Sessions track at PodCamp Western MA!


When:  Saturday, February 5, 2011 – 9:30 am to 4:00 pm
Where: Westfield State University, Horace Mann Center, 333 Western Ave, Westfield MA 01085

What does it mean to have a 'track'?
Amongst the sessions during the day, there will be a series of them focused on the job search with an emphasis on social media.

What is a PodCamp?
PodCamp is an un-conference about social media and online networking. It is an open and collaborative event with discussions and interaction from attendees. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. Some sessions will be planned ahead of the event, but plenty of spaces will be open for the topics YOU want to discuss and learn.

Why should I go?
PodCamp is NOT just about podcasting, but about all social media/networking, and its relevance and usefulness to community, business and otherwise. This PodCamp is all about blogging, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, podcasting, videocasting/YouTube, and any other online community tools.

What does it cost?

Tickets are $25 ($10 for students), but all are expected to participate and/or present. You can participate by giving a presentation, demo, or joining into another cooperative event, being on a panel/roundtable, or in other ways helping out on event day.

And there is a special deal for those who want to go but are un-employed or under-employed! Steve Sherlock has arranged to provide four (4) tickets to help you save some money.

It is worth taking the chance

You want to go to Job Search Jam Sessions but you're waiting for the phone call for that interview.

THAT interview. You know. The one that will land you in the dream job and get you off unemployment.

But you really would like to go to Job Search Jam Session. You heard it was such a great time in May.

Folks learned about negotiating, entrepreneurship, networking, resumes and LinkedIn. Someone from the Milford Career Center came to showcase their suite of programs.

It was held in Hopkinton and those who went really liked the event. They asked for more sessions. They asked for a longer day.

Now it is coming on Friday, October 1. A full day with more sessions. And yet you are waiting for that phone call.
