My presentation on "Sharing Your Identity on Social Media" is available via YouTube (video)

The first of my two sessions at the Metrowest Symposium: "Sharing Your Identity on Social Media" is now available for viewing via YouTube.

Franklin TV recorded this session and each of the other breakout sessions. The format of the day called for two sessions each on four topics. While the sessions themselves covered the same topic, the Q&A in each may have been slightly different as the participants changed. The first session was recorded, the second was not.

Your data: You should own it

"Throughout history, there has always been a trade-off between liberty and equality in the pursuit of prosperity. The world has constantly been going through the circle of wealth accumulation to wealth redistribution. As the tension between the haves and have-nots is breaking so many countries, it is in everyone's interest, including the large data companies, to prevent this new form of inequality. "

PodCamp Western MA - student tickets available

"Springfield Technical Community College student Robyn Miller likes to keep busy.
The parent of a 2-year-old child, Miller is pursuing her second degree at STCC while running her own business. What’s more, she’s organizing a major social media conference in Western Massachusetts.
Called PodCamp WesternMass, the event is sold out for the general public, but students can purchase tickets for $19, discounted from $59 thanks to a sponsor of the event.
The 12th annual PodCamp will be held at Valley Venture Mentors, 276 Bridge St., on Feb. 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The ticket price includes the conference, food, afterparty and panel keynote. To purchase tickets and find more information, visit www.podcampWM.org.
Miller describes PodCamp as an “unconference,” which means the schedule isn’t set until the attendees arrive.
“It’s based on what the particular audience wants to learn,” Miller said. “You walk in. The group gathers, and we make a schedule together. It’s an opportunity to learn about things that are trending now.”

social media policy update required (audio)

2 quick thoughts heading into the weekend.

  1. on the media policy needing to be changed for MLS and NFL.
  2. on the new feature in OneNote that autocompletes a math equation

The social media policy is one piece of the rather long disclaimer that is part of the New England Revolution 'membership' package.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AJsvRw1CeHTk9SMYTEz9Nf6rZkeUAtN-Du_j1ouamfg/edit?usp=sharing

"I agree that I and/or each person who enters Gillette Stadium using tickets issued to me will not transmit or aid in transmitting any description, account, picture, reproduction, or other depiction (including text, data, or visual) in any media of all or any part of the event."
This was apparently written 10 years ago. Yes, long before the likes of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Periscope, etc. came into prominence. Now, we need the lawyers to get back to the drawing board to update the language in light of the current situation. Phrase it such that you still get some brand protection and yet I (and others) don't run afoul of the restrictions to take pictures and share accordingly.

sample of a photo that I took that violates the ticket policy at #mls and #nfl stadiums today, a rewrite of the policy is needed

and on the second point, about the autocompletion of an equation
Ink Math Assistant and Ink Replay- Using your stylus in OneNote you can now write out equations and then have them solved and then see the steps that were used to get to that answer. Microsoft calls itthinking with ink and I call it pure magic because I was always bad at math. It is currently only available in OneNote for Windows 10.
- Replay inking in Office apps is like a screen recorder for ink based annotations that lets you see the sequence of someone marking up a document. It is currently available in OneNote on Windows 10 but will soon expand to other programs in Office 365 including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Even AARP says you need to be social to find work these days!

Using one or more of the social media tools to find work these days is becoming more and more of a requirement. The recent AARP Bulletin, (yes, I am that old (although young at heart!) has the cover article titled "Why you need social media to find your dream job"

AARP article on social media for job hunting
AARP article on going social to look for work
If you are 40+ and looking for work today, you need to be using LinkedIn, Facebook, and other social media tools. Why? The recruiters are using those tools to check you out. If you don't have a good presence there, they will simply skip by you.

There are naysayers who claim you don't need to use these tools. I would agree it is not absolutely required for every industry or skilled position but it is becoming more so.

One item in the recent and local Franklin news makes this point. Brittany MacLeod just graduated from Marist College in NY. She was a Franklin High School grad and served as the student representative to the School Committee for two years. This spring her mother heard about Australia running a campaign for #bestjob. Brittany found out and started her campaign. This young lady from little Franklin, MA rose to the top 3 in the world out of 600,000 candidates!

On Wednesday Jun 5th, she was hosted at the MA State House and presented a proclamation wishing her the best of luck. In the evening, she received similar treatment from the Franklin Town Council. Do you think something like that might help your job application?

As this is posted, she is in Australia courtesy of the Australian Board of Tourism running the job search to prove herself as one of the three finalist for "Chief Funster". She'll find out June 20th if she'll be moving down under to start her career.

Will the YouTube videos, blog posts, tweets, Instagram pictures, that she used to help create the buzz around her campaign work for you?  Maybe all of them won't but one or more of them just might give you the edge you need to rise out of the pack.

The Job Search Jam Sessions being held this Friday, Jun 14 will feature one or more sessions on these social media tools. You'll be able to update your LinkedIn profile picture (photographer on site).

So what are you waiting for?

Get to the Job Search Jam Sessions webpage to find out what else is happening.
http://jobsearchjamsessions.blogspot.com/

While there check out the results of the three prior JSJS events (2 in 2012, and one in 2011). For $8 you can afford to find out how to use these social media tools to get your next position.

Send BMAC down under!

G’day! I’m Brittany MacLeod, but my mates call me BMAC. I’m an electrically enthusiastic sheila who squeezes the most out of every day. I’m always down for an adventure and to explore. I’m the furthest thing from shy and love meeting new people. Variety is the spice of life, which is why I’m applying for the best job in the world!
The 30 second entry video for this contest wasn’t enough time for me to express just how fun and qualified I am to be Chief Funster, so I decided to create a social media campaign [leading up to the day they announce the final contestants] further convincing why Australia should pick me for the best job in the world!
If you don't already know Brittany, you can quickly find out a lot about her with this campaign for the 'best job in the world.'

I remember Brittany as she was the FHS Student representative to the School Committee for a couple of years. This was in the time where my schedule allowed me to report from more of those meetings than I have been able to recently. She was always a bundle of energy.

So what is one lesson to take away from this? For those in the job market, this is a good example of what it can take to get what you want. That BMAC, an FHS graduate, is now one of the top 25 out of thousands of applications from around the world for a position in Australia is significant.

Will this kind of social media campaign work for every job applicant? No, but consider what you can do for your job search circumstances. This topic will be one of those on the agenda for discussion at the Job search Jam Sessions coming up on June 14th.

Which Social Network Makes The Most Business Sense?

The article referenced here raises good points about what social media tool you should consider spending time integrating with your business. One aspect of the discussion they do not consider is location. Yes, remember the old adage: "location, location, location"?

You do need to consider where your customers are. If your customers are on Facebook, then use it. If you customers are on LinkedIn, use it. If your customers are not on Pinterest, then don't use it unless you can find a real good reason to do so.

A couple of years ago I said the same thing in a conversation with Mary-Lynn and George on the Bigg Success podcast. You can listen and read the post here

Retrofit

Hmm, very interesting concept. Doing something like improving overall health does require dedication and positive reinforcement. Using current technology to assist with the data capture and incorporating that data into the program seems like a good combo.

The pricing may be reasonable given the results and the need to get fit.

There are additional videos with client stories. Much to explore on their website.

I feel comfortable with my health and approach as a life long runner, but maybe this would be a good fit for you or someone you know?

Thanks to my brother Bob for the tip to this service!

Share your job search story

If you want to do more to explore social media tools, there is an opportunity to blog!

In the session on "Exploring Social Media Tools", the discussion was lively and wide ranging. Blogs provide an opportunity to position yourself with content creation. Twitter provides a link for Google with only 140 characters. LinkedIn is for professional networking. Facebook is used more for family and friends. Google+ is the new kid on the block with opportunities to make an impact. This is a quick summary that does not do full justice to the discussion. It does provide an indication of the give and take. Most in the room participated in one or more of the tools mentioned.

This site serves a dual purpose. One it provides a publication vehicle for my 'job search notes'. Two, it provides a central base point for the Job Search Jam Session events.

To further your own exploration of social media, if you want to do a guest post on your job search efforts, to share a tip or two on what you have found, this is one place you can do so. You can dip your toe into the water and see if you like it. The site is already established, you won't have to worry about setting it up or anything related to getting started. You can focus on creating the post.

Your point of view is just as important as the next person's. Being ready and able to state your case is one of the key factors for long term success.

Providence, RI - water view

Send me an email expressing your interest and we can take it from there. If the guest post works well for you, you can consider becoming a regular contributor here, or going off and establishing your own site. Either way, I'll be able to provide support and help.

So do you want to share your story?

Putting the social in social media

The PodCamp WesternMass organizers (Morriss Partee, Jacklyn Stevens and Kelly Galanis) appeared on MassAppeal to discuss the event coming up on Saturday, Feb 5, 2011.

Yours truly is mentioned as organizing the track (a set of sessions) focused on how to use social media for your job search.

If you can make it to the PodCamp WesternMA in Westfield St Univ, you should see if you can go for free. The details can be found here

PodCamp Western Mass - Scholarships Available

There will be a Job Search Jam Sessions track at PodCamp Western MA!

When:  Saturday, February 5, 2011 – 9:30 am to 4:00 pm
Where: Westfield State University, Horace Mann Center, 333 Western Ave, Westfield MA 01085

What does it mean to have a 'track'?
Amongst the sessions during the day, there will be a series of them focused on the job search with an emphasis on social media.

What is a PodCamp?
PodCamp is an un-conference about social media and online networking. It is an open and collaborative event with discussions and interaction from attendees. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. Some sessions will be planned ahead of the event, but plenty of spaces will be open for the topics YOU want to discuss and learn.

Why should I go?
PodCamp is NOT just about podcasting, but about all social media/networking, and its relevance and usefulness to community, business and otherwise. This PodCamp is all about blogging, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, podcasting, videocasting/YouTube, and any other online community tools.

What does it cost?
Tickets are $25 ($10 for students), but all are expected to participate and/or present. You can participate by giving a presentation, demo, or joining into another cooperative event, being on a panel/roundtable, or in other ways helping out on event day.

And there is a special deal for those who want to go but are un-employed or under-employed! Steve Sherlock has arranged to provide four (4) tickets to help you save some money.

How do I get one of those tickets?
Send an email to Steve (shersteve at gmail dot com) and state your case:
Clearly and concisely, explain what you have been doing as part of your job search and how participating in PodCamp would help your effort.

Print extras in today's Milford Daily News

The viability of print whether newspapers or magazines is being questioned everyday. I think the local paper is doing something strange here. They are putting exclusives in the print edition and using social media to advertise that fact.

What's so odd about this?
I have seen more print publications advertise exclusives that can be found online behind their firewall. and how successful are they? Not very, folks don't like the firewalls.

So maybe it would be better to use the print edition for the exclusives. What is strange about this is that the advertisement about the exclusives in print appears in the social media channels (as in this RSS feed) after the normal working folks would have had a chance to stop for the paper on their way to work. If they waited until after, the odds are they may not get one on the way home.

The paper has been doing this for several weeks now, how successful they are remains to be seen.

Southern New England Media Makers - Dec 19

The Southern New England Media Makers got together for their monthly meetup at Morin's Diner in Attleboro. @BenSpark had his camera ready to go around for the intro and what everyone is working on.

Jim Jones, the co-founder (along with Bruce K Garber) was missing as he had a priority to deal with on the family side. He and his wife gave birth to twins that morning. We were able to pass around photos as Jim shared them on Facebook.

As I tweeted during the event, having breakfast (good food) and good conversation, what a combo!

Jeff Glasson and I hadn't seen each other since PodCamp Boston 3 so it was good to catch up.

Kyle MacNaught came for the first time and shared what he is with the Pulse Network.

Amanda MacArthur (@amaaanda), Patrick Hughes (@eastofprov) are regulars for this meeting, always doing something interesting and able to share some details on video ins and outs.

If you can make it to Attleboro, next month, it may very well be worth your while to learn, share and make good connections. The group meets on the 3rd Sunday of the month.

How Do You Grow - from Chris Brogan

human business works update

HBW

How Do You Grow?

Hi Steve --

Last week, I was asked how I have managed to grow my businesses, and I thought that might be a useful topic for this newsletter. The thing is, I had a lot of thoughts on my mind, and didn't want to write you a super long email. So, I recorded an audio for you.

In it, I share with you my thoughts on which type of person helps you grow, about how I set about finding the right type of people to partner with, and through my own experiences, I tell you about how building a strong and useful network was the core to this.

It's just a conversation between you and me, but hopefully, it'll help you understand some of what goes into growth.

The recording is HERE. It's about 10 minutes or less, and it's an MP3 file. If you want to download it to your computer, or drag it to your iPod or whatever, just right click (or control click on a Mac) and do "save as."

I hope that helps. If you have other questions after that, just let me know, and I'll gladly help. Hit reply to the email and ask away. Good?

A Holiday Season Request

In the US, we're about to celebrate Thanksgiving. Elsewhere, it's just November something-or-other. In either case, we're getting into a season where we think more about giving than most other times in the year.

One charity I support and love is Skip1. The premise is simple: "skip a handbag, feed hungry children." You go to the site and then just donate some money instead of purchasing something. Make sense? So, instead of buying an extra DVD for yourself this week, give that $20 to feed a half dozen kids.

As you're thinking of going out to Black Friday or buying on Cyber Monday, please consider Skipping $20 - 30 of the money you'll save on that new flat screen TV, and feeding hungry kids. It just feels darned good to do so.

http://skip1.org is the place. Swing by. I'll be there. And thanks!

Small Business Series

In the coming weeks, I'm lining up more and more resources for small businesses. Over at 501 Mission Place, I got Jennifer Aaker and Andy Smith (authors of the Dragonfly Effect) to talk about how nonprofits can improve their campaigns. Here, in the newsletter, as we gear up to launch Kitchen Table Companies, you'll get some great stuff from various people on the topic of business finance, on the topic of growth, on the topic of marketing and marketing tools, and on the topics of leadership and management with heart.

If you think this might appeal to some others, please consider forwarding this to a friend.

THANK YOU!

I love our time together. I'm grateful for any ideas you give me. If you want me to cover other topics, just reply and let me know.

-Chris...
