6 weeks without a car (audio)

reflections on  six weeks without a car, four real weeks as I spent 8 days in Hong Kong and then a week on vacation between Christmas and New Year's... what was missed or changed in that time? Not much really ...

Portland joint 'selfies'

Dolores and I spent the day walking around and about Portland, ME. The sun in the morning gave way to more clouds in the afternoon and it got chilly. We were prepared.

Take a walk and talk

I like this idea!
Nilofer Merchant suggests a small idea that just might have a big impact on your life and health: Next time you have a one-on-one meeting, make it into a "walking meeting" -- and let ideas flow while you walk and talk.

Having recently received a FitBit and while I knew I was spending a lot of time sitting, I figured my three days of running would compensate. Not even close. Now I am trying to figure out how to walk more. Nilofer's idea is a good start.

Photo weekend

I did get to compose my listing of 5 songs but the write up of the five stories is taking a bit longer than I thought. Took a nice good walk on Saturday to capture some photos around Franklin. Some I have posted right away, others I'll use as needed.

I updated the cover of the Franklin Matters Facebook page with the 'spring' look. No need to see the snow any longer!   http://www.facebook.com/franklinmatters

I took some photos around the old town pool, the site of the new sculpture park

Here are a current set of photos of the new high school

walking around

On my 'reporting by walking around' Franklin, I carry my camera and find photo opportunities. Some photos I use right away, some are filed away for use when I need either inspiration or an example of something I already found to help make the point.

Yes, 'reporting by walking around' is a take off on the 'managing by walking around' business concept that has had some legs because it works. It becomes harder to do today physically only because less of us are really all working in the same space. Some of my team at work are not in the same building so touching base with them can't be done by walking around. Technology steps in to help. I can still reach out to talk, chat, email etc with them every day.

Walking helps me keep in touch with what is going on around Franklin. I make time for that on the weekend. With my work schedule and shrinking daylight hours, the weekend is the only practical time for this. Networking can be done on a 7 x 24 x 365 basis. What used to be done only in person can now be done almost anytime, anywhere via technology. Chat, hangouts, email, LinkedIn... the choice of tools is almost growing daily.

Do you make time to walk around?

Do you make time to network?

One shoe

A kid's shoe on the curb. Only one when they are generally worn in pairs.

How did it get there? There must be a story behind this.

Dropped from a stroller passing by on the sidewalk? While the size is small, it seems a little too large for someone who would be sitting in the stroller.

Maybe tossed from the backseat of their family vehicle in a tussle with their sibling? Parent or parents in the front seat unaware of what just happened?

And when they arrive at their destination, how come you only have one shoe?

beach sand

sandals on the beach

They look like they were washed up. In fact, they were stepped out of to better feel the sand with my toes.

Two kinds of sand along the beach. That closer to the surf, hard packed but still supporting as you step. Further ashore, much softer. Your feet settle more deeply and you need to adjust your walk.

More like real life, needing to adjust a little each time as you make your way!

What kind of beach sand do you enjoy?

Ice & Snow

Ice & Snow
Originally uploaded by shersteve.

The sun is coming up nicely today. There is a crust of ice on the snow. I was walking on top of this crust this morning while down at the high school track "recording studio" I use for my Passionate Runner podcasts. The outdoor setting I think is appropriate for talking about an outdoor activity like running. The occasional breeze or bird chirping in the background adds to the setting. I am glad the sun was out. It was about 18 F with wind chill reported to be in single digits. I was well bundled for the recording and dressed down further when I ran with the Pacers.

Dolores and I took our walk this morning (after I came back from running). We altered our course due to the lack of sidewalks on most roads. We also did not stop for coffeee but came directly home and brewed our own pot.
