High school reunion time. Yes, it has been more a few years since I have been there. I was actually fortunate to have coached at St Raphael Academy for several years before changing direction. Coming out of college, I was going to be the world's greatest English teacher. Spent almost six years working as a substitute teacher and track coach before switching to the business world.

I enjoyed those years teaching and coaching. I don't regret having moved on to the world of business. I have ended up teaching in many more subtle ways as a manager. And now the chance to go to my high school reunion. Wow! 40 years - how time does fly!

There are some missing among my class. If the ways of the web today can help to find them, or them find us, maybe they'll see this and join us for the reunion.

Franklin Agents and Brokers: Real estate brokers support new high school

For me, the most compelling reason for the new high school is what it does for real estate values. Seeing the realtors get together to write this is great!

The undersigned are agents/brokers from some of the larger real estate brokerages in the Town of Franklin, specializing in both residential and commercial real estate sales. We are writing to explain why we support the new Franklin High School from a real estate perspective. One of the first questions every potential buyer asks us is "How is the school system?" There is an absolute, indisputable correlation between home values and school ranking. So, whether or not you have a child in the Franklin school system, this impacts every home and/or commercial business owner in the town of Franklin.

In the Globe: High School Sports fees

Mark and Monica Juitt's son and daughter both go to Ashland High School, and both play sports. Between them, Nina and Tim Juitt will participate on five teams this year.

Last year, their activities would have cost the family $650 in sports fees. But this year, the school district has raised the fees and eliminated a cap on how much a family has to pay, and the Juitts are facing a bill for $1,353.

"It's a lot of money," said Monica Juitt. To offset the cost, she will not pay the bus fee, about $280 per student, and will instead drive her children to school, she said.

It is too bad the Globe does not provide a link or way to share the table of the fees charged by the high schools in the 28 communities shown in the printed version of the paper. That is a table that one should keep for reference.

Franklin School: High School emergency generator died

An emergency generator at the high school died during the summer. It was a 40 year old unit and has seen its useful life. There currently is a rental in place providing emergency coverage.

The replacement would cost about $50,000-100,000. This was not budgeted for. There is no plan for this just yet. This is one of many items that could fail as the high school continues to age.

Franklin Schools: Building Committee for High School

Discussion around should there be a building committee for the high school project. The Commonwealth has not yet defined the process so putting one together might be premature.

There apparently is a meeting on October 1 with the superintendents and the state office where the program will reportedly be laid out.

Probably will not see much definitive action other than further discussion between the School Committee and the Town Council until then.
