The undersigned are agents/brokers from some of the larger real estate brokerages in the Town of Franklin, specializing in both residential and commercial real estate sales. We are writing to explain why we support the new Franklin High School from a real estate perspective. One of the first questions every potential buyer asks us is "How is the school system?" There is an absolute, indisputable correlation between home values and school ranking. So, whether or not you have a child in the Franklin school system, this impacts every home and/or commercial business owner in the town of Franklin.

"mentoring is one of the most important tools"

I think Mary's acknowledgment on the importance of mentoring should occur more often. We all can think back, if we take the time, to an important decision and to who helped us. The one thing they were able to provide was a third parry view. They were able to express what they saw the decision as. In the middle of the decision and the dozens of factors around it, we did not have the ability to step back to see what was going on so clearly as they could provide.

Everyday decisions do not need a mentor, but our big decisions do benefit from one.

With this in mind, review the interview with Mary Dolaher, CEO of IDG World, and see if you find something else to take away from her experience.

With organizers getting ready for the 22^nd year, Sue Ann Pearson, the newly named executive director of the Lowell Festival Foundation, believes the event can only grow – and offer revelers summer fun without spending a lot of gas money to get there.

“There is that lovely word, ‘free’ – there are no gates, no admission,” said Pearson, noting that the festival still provides what very few can – a far-reaching scope of concerts with no admission cost.

New this year will be a carnival-style parade through downtown Lowell, with local artists and musicians joining in the revelry, Pearson said.

You might want to take in Portuguese fado singing – a traditional style of soulful ballad that has found a new audience.

Or, if you are in the mood for a different kind of blues, you might want to take in Henry Gray and the Cats, with a sultry sound straight out of Gray’s native New Orleans.

hypermiling - one way to save

In theory, hypermiling means besting any car's Environmental Protection Agency fuel efficiency estimates for hybrids, sport utility vehicles and everything in between.

Behind the wheel, it's a different approach to driving: going at or below the speed limit; accelerating slower; coasting more and using the brakes less (when safe); timing red lights to idle as little as possible.

The techniques sound simple enough - though there are more advanced ones, such as shifting into neutral and turning the car off while coasting down a hill, and then restarting - but stopping yourself from pressing the accelerator out of habit is easier said than done.

The concept also predates the current spike in gasoline prices. But judging by online discussion boards and blogs, there seem to be lots of new, interested practitioners, looking to squeeze as many miles per gallon as possible.

During the Town Council meeting 5/7/08 when Chairman Chris Feeley proposed a committee to prepare a long range projection for Town finances.

"taxpayers expect and deserve a five-year plan"

"The most important thing we can do to help pass the ($2.8 million) override is to immediately begin an intensive planning process that will lead to the development of a five-year financial plan before the year is over," said School Committee member Ed Cafasso.

"It's badly needed. Not only do taxpayers expect and deserve a five-year plan, we as town officials need a blueprint to guide our decisions going forward - we can no longer afford to beg for a life preserver every year," said Cafasso.
