"And I shall have some peace there"

A new book "And I shall have some peace there" caught my eye. Margret Roach was being torn and walked away to find peace in her garden. She just released her book and this is the 'trailer' for the book.

You can find more about Margret on her website

Thanks to @pistachio for the hat tip to Margaret

Harry Potter - Deathly Hallows arrives Nov 19th

Harry Potter 7 is coming to the the theaters near you.

These standup posters were at the Lincoln Mall where I walk with Dad. They are two triangular pieces, each of the three sides depicts a different characters. The good characters on one (Harry, Ron, and Hermoine), the 'bad' characters (Voldemort, Snape and yes, I have forgotten her name). I am embarrassed to say that I did forget her name. She is deliciously played by Helena Bonham Carter.

I likely won't be able to read all the prior books before this movie. I used to try and do that before each of the books came out as they were published, and then again before each movie was released but alas, I will be driving this time to work and not riding the train so my reading time is cut down. Yes, I could do books on tape but I fear I would get too involved in the book and not pay enough attention to the driving.

Still it might be worth a try!

Have you read Harry Potter?

Memory Lane: Hardy Boys

You can find some Hardy Boys books at the Franklin Library Book Sale today at the DPW on Hayward St.

I almost picked up these first four books of the Hardy Boys series. These bring back memories. One schoolmate had the series and we made sure to stay good friends to get the books as they were available.

The Tower Treasure
The House on the Cliff
The Secret of the Old Mill
The Missing Chums

Franklin W Dixon wrote the adventures of Frank and Joe Hardy as the solved mysteries around their hometown of Bayport. I recall several heated discussions amongst my brothers and others of our group when we found out that Franklin W Dixon was a pen name and not a real person. In fact, several authors contributed to the original series which first appeared in 1927 and the updated version which started in 1959. This was the series I grew up with.

There have been additional updates but by the time they came out I had moved on to other reading.

I recall my sisters getting into the Nancy Drew. Both the boys and girls got into The Happy Hollisters. Do you remember them?

What other book series did you read growing up?

Yes, that will show differences in age, but I am not concerned about that. I am more curious about the books that you grew up with.

books at hand

I am continuing to set up the study/office at home. Here is what it looked like this afternoon:

setting up the book shelf

A close up of the books on the shelf:

arranging books on the shelfImage by shersteve via Flickr

The books within reach fit primarily into three categories:
  1. have read, need to write a book review
  2. high on the "to read" list
  3. ready reference for the job search

What books are on your shelf?

Bookshelf down

I have dismantled the book shelf in the study in order to clear the room for a fresh coat of paint and new carpet.

Partly because the room needs painting, partly because I'll need a formal desk, partly because it was just time to do it.

Taking the books and other stuff off the shelves took the longest amount of time. Once the shelves were clear, taking it apart was easy. My grandfather, Armand Joyal, had helped me craft this. He was a cabinet maker and a real craftsman. The simplicity of the design: steel dowels to support the shelving, the reuse of the two outside poles from my family's basketball hoop, the two angle brackets to tie the shelving to the wall, all marvelous.

Here is a condensed view of the dismantling:

What work around the house do you like to do?

Painting, cleaning, gardening, cooking, ???

My Life as a Verb - Patti Digh

utterz-image

What is better than starting a day in the fog and ending it with sunshine?

What is better than a good day at work?

What is better than starting to run again?

One thing at least is better - it's here - "My Life as a Verb" arrived today

I will have the honor of talking with Patti later this month and then being part of the "book launch blog tour" in September. Stay tuned for more info on this wonderful author and her special book.

Conversations threads

Some times blog posts go out into the www ether and just sit there. You hardly know if someone has read them or not. The statistics don't always tell the whole story.

And then there are blog posts that generate conversation. Conversation that deepens the original writing. Conversation that weaves other thought threads together in a new tapestry, or new shades of light.

One of the best conversations I had online was over the course of a few days last year when I participated in the Love Affair With Books on the Joyful Jubilant Learning blog.

Yes, it is a mouthful and deliberately so. The folks that congregate there do LOVE books, and LOVE talking about books even more so.

Need an example?

Check out How to Read an Unfinished Book.

And if you really want, go back into the archives to find my favorite conversation on This is Your Brain on Music.

Oh, yes.
returns next month!

Book Meme (belatedly responding)

I got tagged by Troy Worman to participate but time has almost run away...

The Protocol: Answer 5 questions. Tag 5 booklovers.

The Questions:

  1. How many books do you own?
  2. What was the last book you read?
  3. What was the last book you purchased?
  4. What five books are most meaningful to you?
  5. What is your most obscure favorite book? Or, favorite most obscure book…

My answers:

1 - How many books do you own?
Too many to count. The photo above is from one of two small book cases. The one that is the most clean and therefore the most photogenic. I also have a 12 foot long by 7.5 foot tall bookcase that is full. I need to organize some of the non-book items and will ultimately share this picture. It is my favorite bookcase.

2 - What was the last book you read?

I am almost finished reading A Circle of Quiet by Madeleine L'Engle

3 - What was the last book you purchased?

I just placed an order to Amazon for "Again to Carthage" by John L Parker Jr.

4 - What five books are most meaningful to you?
(in the business of life category)
Covey's The 8th Habit
Rosa Say's Managing with Aloha
This is Your Brain on Music - Daniel Levitin
Tim Sanders; Love is the Killer App: How to Win Business and Influence Friends
Marcus Buckingham; The One Thing You Need to Know

5 - What is your most obscure favorite book? Or, favorite most obscure book…

Neuromancer - William Gibson

Enjoy!

Operation Paperback

A good idea for those books that you did not get to the Franklin Library book sale.

Operation Paperback is a non-profit, grassroots program founded in 1999. We collect gently used books and send them to American troops deployed overseas.

Many of our troops are serving far from home and living in facilities that provide few of the comforts of home. At the end of the duty day, the opportunity to escape into a good book is welcomed. Every week we receive thanks from troops who are glad to be appreciated and remembered.

Our service members make sacrifices every day for our country. It takes so little to let them know that we appreciate what they are doing for us. When you join in Operation Paperback, you will let our troops know that you support them, and you have not forgotten them.

Franklin: Library Book Sale 10/20/07

Yes, the Library Book sale is coming on Saturday, October 20th.

The week that was, the month that will be

Friday already, the weather is pounding the Northeast after running rampant through the middle and southern states.

A good day to stay indoors and read. After all, this completes Read Across America week.

The big three highlights for you to consider.

(1) The Owen and Mzee story as told here and here
The story of friendship between two animal species has a message for us all. The story of how Isabella became the author of two books is enlightening. The connections and sharing made possible by the web is one of many stories that can be told of the power of the web.

(2) Ray, in his own words from the Show with ZeFrank
Sportsracers may already be familiar with the story of Ray's song. Certainly with the sportsracers collaboration in remixing it, in creating the video, in finding Ray (in two days) and ultimately in this video where Ze delivers the CDs to Ray and captures Ray, in his own words. Priceless!

(3) A Love Affair with Books
The third highlight continues for the rest of March. Yes, really. Jump over to the Joyful Jubilant Learning blog for the Love Affair with Books. 24 writers sharing their review of 24 books they have read. Look for my entry on March 7th.
