Attraction

The dogwood tree provides a nice view each month as it grows from spring through summer. From the white blossoms against the the green leaves to the ripening fruit in August.



The fruit as it ripens turns red. Becomes more visible as it changes from green. The squirrels and birds become attracted to the fruit.

What change do you make to be come more attractive?

Flickr backup tool, plus

From MAKE Magazine, I find this entry:

A quick search landed me on FlickrEdit, a Java desktop application that uses the Flickr API to manage and export your Flickr content.

FlickrEdit will launch from a URL, after which you'll have to agree to a security dialog and you'll have the option of adding a shortcut to the app on your Desktop. After the application starts, you can associate it with your Flickr account and allow FlickrEdit to access your photos.

Your photo sets will be listed in the FlickrEdit interface. Simply select the ones you want to back up, hit the backup button in the lower right, and select a folder. FlickrEdit will download all of the full-res versions of your photos, broken out into subdirectories for each set.

Niagara Falls Photo Selected

Use caution with Flickr pix

Found this article on Wired that caught my eye, especially since I have used a couple of Flickr photos recently that were thus marked.

Yahoo's photo-sharing site, Flickr, has been an early and enthusiastic supporter of Creative Commons licenses. But there's one aspect of the licenses that Flickr doesn't respect: Users can remove the Creative Commons designation from their photos -- even though that may violate the terms of the license.

Creative Commons offers several licenses that people can attach to their creations as alternatives to more-restrictive copyright protection. Under CC licensing, content creators can indicate that their works are OK to republish under various specific conditions. Once applied to a creative work, Creative Commons licenses are supposed to be permanent

and this is the kicker:

Flickr provides more flexibility to photographers than Creative Commons does. On the popular photo-sharing site, users can switch photos back and forth -- without limitation -- between CC licenses and "all rights reserved" copyrights.

How to: make something with fd's Flickr Toys

I have used fd's Flickr Toys for several picture compilations or alterations including a couple recently. How do you make something with the toys?

1 - decide what you want to do
There are many toys to use. I have used the mosaic frequently. It allows me to combine several pictures together to make one posting. For example, one on DejaBrew; one with my tour guide; one looking over the years at the growth and development of my daughters.

I used the Warholizer
I used the Hockney toy
I used the fake ID badge

2 - upload the picture to flickr
You don't need to as you can load it specifically for the creation. If you already have one you want to use on flickr, the Toys make it real easy to access your account and pick the picture (or set) you want.

3 - set the options for the creation

4 - create

5 - save to your local system or upload to flickr
I tend to do both so I have the "original" and the flickr copy.

Refrigerator Magnet Challenge

Back in November, after the new refrigerator came in, we finally got around to putting the magnets back on. Then I mentioned that the girls when they came home for Thanksgiving had re-arranged them.

Who knew some of them had to be in a specific place?

I was supposed to take a new picture but you know, one thing lead to another.... Well anyway, I had the camera ready and finally took a new photo.

A couple have been added since then but this is what they are ordered as now.

If you can identify two new magnets, and two moved magnets, I provide some link love to your blog (assuming you have one).

Directions:

(1) Make a copy of this Flickr photo, (2) use the note feature to reference the two new and two moved magnets. (3) Send the link to your noted picture via email to me.

Entries due by midnight 2/23/07. Family members excluded from this activity. (Hey, it is only fair Allison and Carolyn. But you can help me judge the winners!)

New - magnet was not on the 11/19/06 photo as posted on Steve's 2 Cents.
Moved - magnet is in a difference position compared to the 11/19/06 photo as noted above.
