ghazal: Weikert 2014

There’s no wifi, points don’t matter
But before each meal
We pause to give thanks

Fallen tree diverted the trail
Along shaded rail line
Where folks gave thanks

Infant music box conjures
Ice cream, grass stained fun
And fire flies giving thanks

Intense or cursive the
Fire circle discussion
Solves enough to give thanks

Joy of sewing triumph fades
Quickly with news of three
Sleeping so well to give thanks

Juggling cans, crossing over
Monkey bridge where laurel
Line the path saying thanks

Weikert Specials

Having made the fire (see yesterday's post), it is time for toasting some english muffins and in this case warming up some slices of Spam that were cooked the day before.

Weikert: cooking breakfast

A Weikert Special is one of the basics of a Baslock breakfast. Toasted english muffin, spread with peanut butter and then topped with a slice of Spam. Heart artery alert! Yes. But it does power one for some good hikes later in the day, and it is not a breakfast we have year round so it works for us.

Some blueberry coffeecake topped off breakfast this morning. Ah such is life!

Back in town from a few days 'off the grid'. Nature and the wonders of the wilds are as impressive as usual.

Do you get time to get away? Really away?

Once upon a time this summer

We did go to Weikert, PA to spend sometime with our good friends, the Bastian's. Doug's father, Walter, has a tradition of making hand cranked ice cream. The old ice cream maker finally gave way last year. It was time this year to christen a new 6-quart model.

Walt's birthday happened to fall during the time we were there and I offered to be the designated photographer to record the surprise party. I finally caught up to putting together the slide show for the multiple birthday parties Walt celebrated, culminating with the big surprise one.

sherku: Hand Cranked Ice Cream

ready the crank in Weikert
the ice man cometh
July 3rd for Walt's birthday

The Bastian's have a tradition of hand cranking a batch of home made ice cream on Doug's father's birthday.

Coming home from Weikert 2 years ago, we bought our own ice cream maker and have put it to good use for some family gatherings. The time was for Carolyn's birthday in 2005.

Empty nest? Ah, but it is a good thing!

sherku: Weikert breakfast

storied fire circle
yesterday's embers bring
today's Weikert breakfast flame

This marks one of our camping and now Weikert traditions. We take it as a challenge to not use a match to start the fire for breakfast preferring to kindle one from the previous night's embers.
