Change is the nature of weather

especially here in New England. Mark Twain is credited with saying that if you don't like New England weather, stick around for 5 minutes and it will change.

And in many cases, that is oh so true. Snow via the nor'easter on Wednesday, windy rain Thursday AM, sunshine forecasted for Friday with a rise in temperatures to 60 by Sunday and maybe 70 for Monday.

The snow will have melted and we might be able to enjoy the deck in our shirt sleeves!

Fasten your seat belts, this will be a roller coaster ride!

14 years of US Weather (video)

What would happen if you put 14 years of weather maps together? It might just look like this!

Fascinating!

Enjoy!

Hat tip to the Guardian for sharing this!

Yes, it is cold here in Franklin

We have had some good old fashioned New England cold weather the past couple of days.

The leaf was stationary for this photo but didn't stay in place long as the wind whipped it up and away. It could have beat the train to Boston yesterday!

With some precipitation coming up from the South later today, we are sure to get some snow. The real question will be what track the storm will take and how much snow will get. Hard to predict due to the fickleness of nature.

My brother and his family are scheduled to fly into Logan on Sunday so I hope the storm starts early and leaves early to allow them to have a good flight.

Stay warm today where ever you are!

Word for the day - Anomalous

Issued by The National Weather Service
Boston, MA
7:53 pm EDT, Sun., Oct. 18, 2009

... WINTRY PRECIPITATION TO GRADUALLY TAPER OFF THIS EVENING...
AN ANOMALOUS EARLY SEASON WINTER WEATHER EVENT IS UNDERWAY ACROSS A GOOD PORTION OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND AS A NOREASTER CONTINUES TO MOVE SOUTHEAST OF NANTUCKET. LIGHT TO OCCASIONALLY MODERATE SLEET... AT TIMES MIXED WITH SLEET AND RAIN... WILL GRADUALLY TAPER OFF AS WE HEAD TOWARD MIDNIGHT. UNTIL THEN... EXPECT LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS ON GRASSES AND VEHICLES. THE PRECIPITATION IS FALLING HARD ENOUGH IN SOME LOCATIONS TO ALLOW SNOW TO STICK TO ROADWAYS. THEREFORE... SLIPPERY TRAVEL IS EXPECTED THROUGH THIS EVENING... ESPECIALLY IN CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST MASSACHUSETTS.

For which Dictionary.com defines anomalous as

–adjective
1. deviating from or inconsistent with the common order, form, or rule; irregular; abnormal: Advanced forms of life may be anomalous in the universe.
2. not fitting into a common or familiar type, classification, or pattern; unusual: He held an anomalous position in the art world.
3. incongruous or inconsistent.

Dogwood - two views today

All in a day in New England. In the rain this morning, I took some pictures of the dogwood as the leaves were starting to turn red.

In the snow this afternoon, I took a couple more pictures to show that in New England Mark Twain is still correct. He said, "If you don't like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes."

Note that he didn't say it would improve. It is certain to change but not necessarily for the better.

Such is life in New England!

X marks the spot for good weather today

Out for our morning walk, found this sky writing opportunity as we turned the corner in our neighborhood.

Double rainbow

utterli-image

Nice double rainbow just now as the train approached Readville. Too bad that tree hides the bottom part, that's where the best color spectrum was. The second band is disappearing to the right of this one already.

Such a fleeting piece of glory!

Politically correct weather

Not wanting to offend those who like snow but don't like rain. Not wanting to offend those who like rain but can't stand snow. Not want to... well, you get the point.

Today we get the mixed precipitation. A little snow, sleet, rain, slush and it is a mess.

To add to the mess, the Franklin line commuter train I took this morning was all single cars. We usually have 3 double and 3 single cars. With the reduction in capacity, it was packed so much so there wasn't room to bring out the laptop and be productive on the way to Boston. Oh well, the magazine took me part way and then it was time to day dream the "to do" listing.

One consolation, the train arrived on time. One of the rare occurrences recently.

During Snow

During Snow

with apologies to Robert Frost...

I shoveled twice yesterday and again this morning. This morning was hard as the snow was more than I thought would be there and as wet as was forecasted. So with a heavy shovel and tired arms, I could only ponder what Robert would have done under these circumstances.

Yes, it is cold

What else is there to say?

This was the outside temperature this morning.

Perfectly 0.0 degrees F.

Stay warm!

White

Yes, a little snow has finally made an appearance here in New England. An inch of fluffy light soft white stuff arrived over night. The browns and greens and grays that existed are now white today.

New England Sunday

For those watching the Jets and Patriots, you know the weather here in New England is glorious this Sunday afternoon. Gillette Stadium is not from from home here in Franklin.

Wait, isn't this January? Isn't this supposed to be winter?

Yes, get used to the new world of weather. This is one aspect of An Inconvenient Truth.
