Wind sculpts the snow

The snow is both beautiful and dangerous.

The wind is continuing to sculpt the snow that it has delivered.

Snow just starting

I think we are as ready as we can be.

• I replaced the missing shear pin on the snow blower and started it up so I know it works.
• I brought some fire wood into use the fireplace
• I covered the firewood pile with a tarp in case we need more wood.
• I filled the bird feeders to give them some sustenance during the storm
• I ran longer this morning than I normally do during the week as I am working from home to avoid travel in the snow

grateful, again

Hurricane Sandy has dissipated. We are fortunate to have been spared the brunt of the storm. The next photo I share of our dogwood tree will reveal how only a few leaves are left. The wind and rain have knocked most of them down.

Our thoughts and prayers go to those for whom the storm remains a problem.

Powerless and lucky

We're powerless but lucky to have escaped with little tree damage from what was left of Hurricane Irene. The power went out about 1:00. We were prepared with batteries, candles and the Coleman camping lantern provides a great deal of light.

When the rain stopped we picked up most of the small branches and twigs dropped by the wind from the trees. It didn't take long to cut up the one large branch that fell into the street. We'll have some good fire wood for the winter!

The cell phone batteries were the first to die away. Depending upon when the power returns (today?), we may need to run the car to re-charge them a bit. I have sparingly used my netbook and broadband card so I have several hours of connection remaining.

We did take a walk around the neighborhood last night. It was a rare event to see no lights anywhere. If there was a light (from a passing car, or a candle in a house) the little light was very noticeable in the darkness.

I hope you all survived with a story or two to pass along.

Something there is that doesn't love a clear driveway,
That sends the frozen-moisture down upon it,

And makes it treacherous for anyone to attempt to pass.

I shoveled twice yesterday and again this morning. This morning was hard as the snow was more than I thought would be there and as wet as was forecasted. So with a heavy shovel and tired arms, I could only ponder what Robert would have done under these circumstances.
