Homelessness is a problem that can be solved - Invisible People @home on PBS

Mark Horvath is working to eliminate homelessness. I was fortunate to meet Mark a couple of times in Chicago when we went to a conference together. His story and passion is real. How real? Watch this four minute trailer for the documentary that is soon to be broadcast on PBS to get a sense of this reality.

@home is a documentary that tells the story of modern U.S. homelessness and one man’s fierce commitment to end it. PBS will air this documentary on March 25, 26 and 28 (see times below). Mark Horvath has experienced the highs and lows of the American Dream, from a successful career in television to barely surviving, homeless and addicted, on Hollywood Boulevard. @home follows Mark as he finds his voice again, hitting the streets with a digital camera and a smartphone to ask homeless people about their own experiences. 

“The invisible guy didn’t intend to become homeless. I didn’t plan on living on the street. Everyone on the streets has their own story, some made bad decisions, others were victims, but none of them deserve what they have been left with, and it is a reflection of our own society that we just leave them there. Please always remember, the homeless people you’ll ignore today were much like you not so long ago” said Mark Horvath.

Mark Horvath’s work has garnered the attention of social media gurus, politicians, advocates, and the American public, and he’s become a respected, independent voice on this issue. It is through this lens that @home, a documentary film produced by Kindling Group, explores the reality of homelessness in America today. @home follows Mark on a cross-country road trip, as he visits communities that are springing up all over this country in tents, by-the-week motels, and storm drains — and shares his struggle to make homelessness in America visible.

There is so much more to Twitter. It is what you make of it. You can build your profile, your brand, and even your business with what you do and share. Be careful to stay within yourself. If you stray too far, that likely won't help your message.

Setting up a Twitter account

So you want to set up a Twitter account, how do you do that?

And the key thing you should do before you start to create your account is to determine what you really want to do with it. Are you going to represent yourself? or your business/company? This should lead to your choice of name. Your name or Twitter handle should be consistent with your brand.

Stones fit, tweets count

Every once in a while, I come across round numbers. Today for example, I noticed I had created 9100 tweets and that this post is 3600.

When the masons built the stone wall, did they count the stones? Not likely. They took those stones that fit and found a place for them.



Stones don't have to be counted, they do need to fit to make the wall.

I didn't number my tweets or posts but I hope they mattered to you!

PodCamp Western Mass - Twitter list update

The listing of Twitter handles was put into a Google document. The document is public. If someone's handle is incorrect, please correct it. (Note, I do have a backup of the listing).

Will I follow you on Twitter?

When your notification arrives that you are now following me, the question for me is 'will I return the follow?'

The answer to that depends upon a number of factors. The factors are initially in no particular order, more stream of consciousness. With more time to think them through, I may revise the order. With your feedback, some aspects of this may change too. I'll let you know either way.

So what will I look for?
If you have a real picture as an avatar, that is a plus - no picture or something bordering on ridiculous looses points.

If you have only tweeted a dozen or so times, and you have in excess of a thousand followers, sorry, you lost me here. I am likely to block you to avoid spammers.

If you have tweeted a number of times, and your follower and following ratio is closer to one, then I'll look to your description. If you sound like a real person, that is a plus. Heavy on the sell side and you're likely to loose me.

If you have provided your location, good. If you are located in New England, that is a plus. I'll more likely bump into you at an event in person. If outside NE, I'll move along to other factors. No location, likely to lose me and risk getting blocked.

If you have provided a link, I'll follow to see what you're about. Tweeting/writing about something we have in common is a plus. Here is where those outside NE still can be followed, we have something in common other than location. No link, less likely to follow. If what you're about is not anything close to what I do, I'll hesitate.

And then look into your recent tweets. If there is conversation with real people, that is a plus. If not, you lost me.

Bottom line, if we meet somewhere, we have something in common and I'll follow you. If you can add value, you're in.

If you fail on the numbers game, the numbers reflect a point in time. Come back later with better numbers and the review process might tip in your favor.

So why layout my thought process on this topic? I run the risk of angering someone. I would rather see if this logic makes sense to folks, see where they would change and get that conversation going.
