Did you know? - updated
Version 4 of the "Did you know?" video was just released. It is just as full of information as it was initially although the effect now is just as staggering.
What are you doing to stay current?
What can you do with your phone today?
How much of a digital native should you become?
Note: email subscribers should click through to view the video on the website.

"you walk on only one leg"
Minutes passed. Finally Maha Ghosananda stood up slowly. I could see his advanced age then and was even more impressed that this man had withstood the evils of the Pol Pot regime.
"If you move through the world with only your intellect," he said in a direct and clear voice, "then you walk on only one leg." With his hands held in prayer, he lifted one leg and slowly and deliberately hopped three times. With the same deliberation and pace, he restored his foot to the floor. After a long breath he began again.
"If you move through the world with only your compassion," he said, lifting his other leg, "then you walk on only one leg." Again he hopped three times.
"But if you move through the world with both intellect and compassion, then you have wisdom." He walked slowly and gracefully, taking three long, slow strides. At the end he bowed his head again and then resumed his seat on the cushion in front of me.
"Thank you," I said to him bowing again.
He smiled gently. There was nothing left to say.

"a sense of belonging and of accountability"
Our most frequent topic of conversation had to do with community, what it meant, how to foster and build it. John (Gardner) believed humans thrive in relationships to each other and that communities in which each individual feels a sense of belonging and of accountability are key to our individual and societal success.

"I could have listened better"
I walked home alone from Nyamirambo that evening, covered in paint, feeling tired, elated, and also perplexed that I had tried so hard to listen and still ended up choosing the wrong color. On the one hand, I hadn't wanted to wait for months until the women made a decision. On the other, I began to understand that I could have listened better, for listening is not just having the patience to wait, it is also learning how to ask the questions themselves. People who've always been dependent on others for some kind of charity or goodwill often have a hard time saying what they really want because no one usually asks them. And if they are asked, the poor often think no one really wants to hear the truth. From The Blue Sweater by Jacqueline Novogratz

The future is now
Via Scott McLeod at Dangerously Irrelevant, I find this great talk Dr. Richard Miller, Chair of the English Department at Rutgers University. Well worth a few minutes to watch.

"we are not handing out gifts"
... Constance became a great storyteller for our new organization, helping wealthy and poor alike understand the power of giving each individual the tools of credit so she would have the potential to change her own life. "We are not giving out gifts," she would say, "but are bringing forth the gifts inside the people themselves."From The Blue Sweater by Jacqueline Novogratz

Keynote to K12 Online 2007
"For the first time in history we are preparing our children for a future for which we can not predict how they will make their living."
"He learned because he's connected."
"Walls don't mean the same thing that they meant to us."
"It is so much within the grasp of those of us who are paying attention."
Quick quotes from David Warlick's keynote presentation at the K12 Online Conference that is being conducted virtually and in multiple media.
The video for this is available here
It is not, nor will it be a YouTube video, as it is longer than the 10 minute limit of YouTube.
It runs approximately 45 minutes and is worth every minute of it.
Do yourself the favor, follow the link and view.

Elder Story Teller
Ronni Bennett, elder blogger extraordinare, has come up with a great idea.
Those of us 50 or more years old, writing from our life experience in 750 words or less would post to this new elder blog. It is still early in the development, details remain to be finalized. I chimed in to comment as follows:
Elder Story Teller.

Great idea Ronni. We do all have stories to tell. Some of us are more adept at telling them but this would give us all an opportunity to practice.
I would not be concerned about the competitive aspects of this. I don't care about winning any awards. I would rather share a story that starts someone else's memory so they in turn get inspired to share... and the cycle would go ever on.
There are lots of pluses for this. I will start digging into my own archives for stories to tell.
Do you have a story to tell?

Read, Write, Share

It used to be "readin, 'ritin, and 'rithmetic". That was the old school way. Math is still important but I think sharing and collaboration are more so.
The Love Affair with Books has moved from Rosa Say's Talking Story to the Joyful Jubilant Learning blog.
I have reserved my spot in this line up. I will expand upon the teaser quotes I have been leaving around to do a full review of This is Your Brain on Music, The Science of Human Obsession by Daniel Levitin
If you would like a spot, feel free to click over and sign up.
Read, write, and SHARE!
