Jobs forecast? Improving slowly

Patrick said he has noticed people's confidence coming back, a key indicator of a financial turnaround.

"Nobody is going to be satisfied until everyone looking can find work," he said. "If you're not working ... the stats mean nothing to you. Confidence has to be part of our recovery. It's coming back, we earned it by doing the work, and we have to do more of it."

Steve Sherlock of Franklin has been unemployed since he was laid off from Fidelity Investments in 2008, and has put together a network of job seekers to do "job search jam sessions" where people can get tips on interview skills, resume building, and networking for a minimal $5 fee.

"We are seeing more people land interviews, maybe once or twice per week," he said.
