From baseball to ball point pens

Growing up my adventure in sports started with baseball, the one round, white, stitched with red thread seams

At first, usually not picked until the lineups were pretty full, the message was practice

Practice to get good enough to get picked earlier

I played multiple positions at first because that was available, then by choice to be available

Wherever needed, even behind the plate, fully decked out in protective gear to play on a hot day

And play is what I wanted, i needed to play so I could get up to hit

Hitting was where it was happening, waiting on the pitch,

Was it good enough to hit, or should I lay off, decisions, split second choices

Going with the pitch when I could, making contact, becoming a regular hitter, lots of solid hits

As i grew taller, the bigger round, orange ball, yes, basketball was recommended

So i learned to play that too, the same routine as when starting baseball, picked last

Again, the message was to practice, so I did, and it was easier with a ball and a hoop even alone

Even if the court was uneven, as long as the rim was close to standard height

The practice was worthy and over time, I moved up the pecking order

Getting picked earlier for my height and then for my grit

Doing the little things, playing defense, boxing out, calling out,

making good passes, all the little things for team play developed a decent shot, balance, aim and follow through, hitting high percentage free throws

Still later along in life, the other large ball, also white but mostly stitched in white threads,

Softball, and not really that soft, called for an after work game with colleagues

Able to do something different than making phone calls, pushing paper

Slow pitch, high arc, shorter base paths, all dirt but otherwise

Similar hitting, catching, throwing, and smart running

Made for a good game with liquid refreshments post game

Later still, walking now, the running and aggressive action days are mostly behind me

Walking is my fun, time to observe, time to think through things, time to work things out

Preparing the storylines, crafting the writing, virtually and in real life

Sharing on the page, the lessons learned, the trials suffered, challenges survived

Building toward a better place, a hopeful future, finding words worthy of the time

That once was real and can be recalled again with the right words and phrases

here and elsewhere!

There are other places to find where I write. Some of you know those, some new readers may not be as familiar so this will be a quick refresher.

My regular updates on what is happening that matters in Franklin, MA can be found on http://www.franklinmatters.org/. I focus primarily on the town budget (follow the money) which means I spend as much time as I can among the Finance Committee meetings, the Town Council and the School Committee.

I also write a weekly summary of the Franklin happenings at  http://franklinmattersweekly.blogspot.com/

As I find good information for those still looking for work, I share that on the Job Search Jam Sessions webpage here http://jobsearchjamsessions.blogspot.com/

While my father has passed on to a better place, some of the family history is being kept on his page - Jerry's Story: http://jerrysherlockstory.blogspot.com/

I do run regularly but have been posting less regularly on my running blog, Passionate Runner http://passionaterunner.blogspot.com/

And in a quiet moment, when I allow the muse to speak, I can capture those poetic thoughts on my poetry blog: http://www.quietpoet.com/

So if you come here and find Steve's 2 Cents quiet, there may be other places where I have been busy!

Friendly reminder

A friendly reminder that while I may miss posting here one day (or two as the case may be) you can check my other writing places to see what I have done.

For example, as mentioned last weekend, the sherkus are rolling:

Job Search Jam Sessions is sharing good stuff

And if you really want to know what matters in Franklin, you should be subscribing to Franklin Matters. You do have a choice of a daily dose or a weekly summary.

My writing about my running is less frequent but you can find me at Passionate Runner

And last but not least, my father's story is being captured at Jerry's Story

Where did the day go?

How did it all go by so quickly?

Took Dad to his doctor's appointment, we did a walk together, and then lunch before I left him. A couple of quick errands then off to the Milford Career Center for a seminar on the unemployment services they offer. Similar to that provided by the outplacement services the company thoughtfully provided so there was nothing new except for more connections to make. One of which provided a tip that seems worthwhile.

Back home to catch up on email and get ready for a phone call with the Guardian Angel of JobAngels. We met at SOBCon and wanted to continue our conversation. This was a convenient time to do so.

Queued some sherku over at quiet poet. I have a draft summary of Governor Deval Patrick's visit to Franklin yesterday amongst a number of other writing tasks to complete. I'll tackle those with a fresh start in the AM.

Simply the best of 2008

What was the best posting I did here this year?

I'd have to say the interview with Patti Digh as part of her "Life is a Verb" blog tour in September.

Why?

This post is simply the best because finally talking with Patti on the phone after correspondence for years was a delight (why did I wait so long?). I also learned a lot making the recording.

If you happened to miss the interview, you can listen to it here.

You can also check out the sherku that were created from the book "Life is a Verb" here

I'm a Confident Writer - Are you?

Joanna, has just moved. To an island off the lovely coast of Scotland. Moving is always a challenge, so many details. Where did that go? What box is that in?

One of the benefits of the internet these days, is that Google (or you favorite search engine) can help you find things. Like the link to Joanna's website.

You don't need to worry about misplacing it during a move.
You don't need to worry about where you put it.

Reading & Listening

Christina captures this wonderfully:
Sometimes when I walk in the woods behind my house, I realize after it is already too late that I have walked through a spider’s web spanning the seven or eight feet of path; tiny gossamer threads invisible to me until I feel them. Long after I’ve continued on, I’m still brushing away the sticky threads that linger, clinging to my cheek or hair. Reading is like this for me. A line, a character, a scene, small fragments of the prose I’ve read remain in my mind long after I’ve put the book aside. Annie Dilliard’s essay “Total Eclipse” is like this. Though the first time I read it was nearly ten years ago, I still get caught in its imagery: I cannot imagine an eclipse without imagining hers.
