Split green pea soup

utterli-image
As cold as it is outside, there is not much that is more warming than a good bowl of home made soup. The ham bone that was calling my name the other day has yielded a good hearty split green pea soup. I can hardly wait for supper!
This is easy to make: simmer the bone in 6-8 cups of water along with a whole medium size onion for 3-4 hours.
Remove the bone, pick the remaining meat from it.
Dice the meat and return to the pot.
Add one pound of dry split green peas.
Simmer for another 30-45 minutes.
Season with pepper to taste.
You can add salt but I leave it out, the ham usually provides enough.
Serve hot with some fresh and crusty bread and it will warm all the way to your toes!
